The Pontiac "Image Statement" was developed at the first Pontiac Image Conference in January 1981. The conference was an effort by the Pontiac division under the leadership of General Manager William E Hoglund and then planning manager John G Middlebrook, to redefine the division and chart its future role in the auto industry.
I think John Middlebrook was the last General Manager that understood what Pontiac was about, and within the limitations of the corporate rules, he was able to lead Pontiac to some very successful years in the late 1980's and early 1990's.
